Overview

From 2 July 2026, for the first time, the keep at Salses Fortress – open for self-guided tours – will offer visitors the chance to experience the monument in a new light.

The signage has also been completely updated, enhancing the visitor experience, and all areas have been fitted with new lighting to highlight the unique architecture.

As soon as they enter the parade ground, visitors will also be able to explore a large, tactile bronze model of the fortress.

This initiative is part of the Centre des monuments nationaux’ commitment to making heritage more accessible and to better guiding visitors as they explore this jewel of Roussillon’s heritage.

The VISIO Foundation

The VISIO FOUNDATION supports the Centre des monuments nationaux in developing projects that promote access to culture and heritage for people with visual impairments.

A leading organisation in providing assistance and support to children and adults with visual impairments, the VISIO FOUNDATION has been working for several decades to promote the inclusion and independence of those affected. Based in Bouchemaine (49), it focuses its work on three complementary areas: clinical neuro-ophthalmological research, the independence and quality of life of people with visual impairments, and access to culture, education and sport.

Convinced that access to cultural heritage is a key driver of inclusion, the VISIO FOUNDATION has been supporting the Centre des monuments nationaux in its accessibility initiatives since 2024. This partnership aims to encourage the trialling of innovative solutions, raise awareness amongst heritage professionals about the challenges posed by visual impairment, and make accessibility a fundamental principle of cultural policy.

Thanks to this support, numerous projects designed to improve the visitor experience for people with visual impairments are being developed within the monuments of the CMN network. This collaboration helps to promote a more accessible, shared and inclusive culture, enabling everyone to discover and engage with heritage in the best possible conditions.
